Television documentary production

Troubled: A Personal Look At Northern Ireland
(broadcast SBS 2000 and 2002)

Troubled: A Personal Look At Northern Ireland, broadcast twice on SBS Television, was Richard’s first foray into filmmaking.

Working alone and travelling at his own expense, Richard spent 5 weeks in Northern Ireland venturing into Republican and Loyalist strongholds, interviewing a range of people about their experiences of The Troubles.

This one-hour program may not answer questions, but it provides an insight into the confusing and emotional world that is Northern Ireland.

What the critics said about Troubled:

“This documentary wonderfully captures the emotional richness of the people of a Northern Ireland which is trying to move forward to a more peaceful and prosperous future.”
The Daily Telegraph, Sydney

“Absorbing and unbiased. This is essential viewing.”
The Canberra Times

“That Richard Snashall’s account of the situation in Northern Ireland is a thoughtful and even-handed treatment of a difficult topic is perhaps its greatest achievement”
The Australian

“Having written, produced, filmed and edited the documentary, Snashall must be given credit for the endeavour.”
The Age, Melbourne

Troubled’s interview subjects range from paramilitaries to parents, police to public officials. This image is from an interview with high school students who provided a fascinating insight into the future of Northern Ireland. When asked if they planned to remain in Northern Ireland, all responded that they were leave.

“We can’t get away from it here, so we have to go instead”
